Under my medical-consulting service contract with the City of Houston, I am the provider-of-choice for members of the police department who need help to put their best-looking face forward when they’re on duty. I offer diagnosis and treatment for officers afflicted with pseudofolliculitis barbae (commonly known as PFB), a medical condition that causes painful ingrown hairs exacerbated by shaving. The city covers my customary fees for police officers who visit my clinic for initial consultations and follow-ups.
HPD’s grooming policy used to require all male officers to be clean-shaven — not only for professional appearance but for a life-saving health and safety reason, too: they must be able to fit and seal gas masks and other personal protective equipment over their faces quickly and properly when responding to biohazardous emergencies. About a year ago, Houston joined Dallas, Austin, and several other metropolitan police departments and U.S. military branches in rolling back restrictions, extending shaving waivers, and allowing short, neatly trimmed facial hair to be worn by officers who prefer that look.
There are still many officers, however, who would prefer be clean-shaven, but the problem is they’re inhibited by the discomfort they suffer from PFB that has gone undiagnosed and untreated. I strongly believe that wearing a beard should not be their only option. That’s why I’m committed to using my expertise in dermatology and pharmacology to provide my proven solutions to address the personal grooming concerns of law enforcement officers in Houston, the surrounding region and even across the nation.
